Lice Infection and Treatment 101
Head lice are obligate human ectoparasites that cannot survive anywhere else than on humans. They need to feed on the human blood in order to survive and grow. Though they do cause disease or carry disease causing pathogens, the sucking of blood causes irritation, itchiness, redness of skin and sometimes inflammation. They reproduce very fast and once infested, are very hard to get rid of.
Signs and symptoms of Lice:
Itchiness in scalp, skin bumps, irritation etc are some common symptoms yet, we suggest regular checking of scalp even in the absence of symptoms as the infestation might have begun without indicating any signs.
Spreading of Lice:
Lice are said to be jumping from head to head which is a common misconception. Lice require direct or indirect contact to migrate from one person to another. They generally transmit from hats, scarves, brushes, combs, headphones, pillows, towels, sleeping pads and head-to-head contact.
Preventive Measures:
To prevent the lice infestation, following measures should be taken:
- Regular checking of scalp
- No sharing of any kind of head gears
- No sharing of spaces such as lockers, desk drawers etc.
- No had to head contact with an infected person
- Maintaining hygiene
- Washing the pillows and bedsheets at regular intervals
Treatment:
After following these measures, if at all lice infestation occurs, one must be careful while following any kind of treatment. As not all the treatments are same and safe, the selection of product matters here a lot! The chemical treatments have pyrethroids which only treat normal lice but not super lice. Hence, to be safe, one should go for natural and pyrethroid less products such as Lice-Nil that cause no harm at all.
