What if one day your child gets home from school and says his scalp feels rather ticklish or that there are small red bumps there. Chances are, your child has head lice infestation. What will you do? Like any other parent, you’d panic! I would advise you to not panic. Many times people don’t even realise they have lice infestation. Recognizing the infestation is the first step to fight the lice problem.

The problem:
We already know the lice problem of America. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) an estimated 6 million to 12 million head lice infestations occur each year in the United States among children aged 3 to 11. The constant scratching of the scalp may annoy your child, disrupting his academic performance. That is why you need to battle the problem right at the beginning because if your child is infested, the next thing you know, you’re too (as lice infestation is highly contagious). Once you know your child is infected, you need to start acting upon it.

The solution:

Here are a few tips to make your child’s academic year lice free:

1. Avoid sharing of certain items: Tell your kid to stop sharing certain personal items like combs, towels etc - you may never know who already has the lice infestation. These are the items that make direct contact with the head hence one must avoid sharing them.

2. Maintain personal hygiene: This is probably one of the basic tips. Make sure your child’s clothes (hat, scarves, coats) and skin care products (combs, hair ties) are washed and clean at all times.

3. Contact with infected person: This is what you’d call the ‘obvious’ thing to do in such cases - avoid contact with person who is already infected. Now, I don't ask your child to break the contact with such a person completely. You can still talk and hang out with them. Just avoid a direct head to head contact because as mentioned above, a lice infestation is highly contagious.

4. Use Conditioners and Shampoos: If there’s one thing the lice hate, it is the smell of eucalyptus oil and lavender oil. So all you gotta do is buy a shampoo/conditioner with eucalyptus oil or lavender oil in it. The louse will stay away from your kid if you make sure your shampoo/conditioner have any of those scents.

5. Use natural ingredients: Lice-Nil relies on powerful natural ingredients to take care of lice. It is made from Neem extract, coconut and tea-tree oils. It kills lice and eggs in a single application of 20 minutes only!

6. Be Alert: When it is a lice problem, parents must be alert at all times. If there is lice infestation going around, regularly check your child’s scalp. Also, schools are easily prone to such infestations. In such cases, ask your child’s school authorities to notify you as soon as there is a reported case of lice infestation in school.

Lice-Nil advises you to follow the given precautions.

Keep yourself and your kids chemical-free, lice-free, and worry-free.
