Lice, a word that has the power to make any person cringe! The creature has been around for a long long time and their earliest recorded presence dates back over a million years ago. Lice have been troubling the humans ever since, especially the children! They are small insects which are parasitic in nature are are specific to humans. They  need to suck human blood for survival or otherwise they cannot live. These small insects make scalp their natural habitat, causing severe itchiness, irritation and redness in the area. They lay eggs, called as “nits”, which grow up to be lice.

None of the corners in the world has been spared by the trauma of this little creature. In fact, in America itself, between 6 and 12 million children are infected every year. The infected children are generally kept away from other kids as the lice spread from head to head contact or sharing any personal headgear. In fact, many schools do not allow infected children to attend classes fearing an outbreak of lice infection in the whole school. The infected ones are isolated from the rest, affecting their mental health and making them feel lonely. This entire stigmatization around the lead lice infection causes psychological and physiological imbalance in the young ones.

Here are a few tips about head lice infection:
  1. Look for symptoms: Kids should be monitored for excessive scratching, redness in scalp, irritation and in fact sleeplessness also.
  2. Do not panic: Do not panic or start using chemical treatment or home remedy. Chances are it might hamper the natural health of the hair and scalp. A proper treatment would solve the issue with no loss of natural hair health.
  3. Do not miss school: Head lice infections are not fatal and are completely treatable! Keeping a child isolated might prevent the spread but would cause more damage to the well being of child’s mind and psychology.

Treatment:
In earlier times, the treatments were not medicinal, but home made. They included use of Vaseline, mayonnaise, olive oil and even the hazardous gasoline! There were many measures taken, proven or otherwise to remove the infestation but were scientifically rejected.
